This was my reply to this thread in the intl forum in case anybody doesnt go in there...........

Thanks for this post

I live just a couple of miles from where the Sophie Lancaster tragedy happened and have given this issue renewed thought in the last few months.

This fear of people who are different has always gone on and to my mind dispalys an arrogant want for analytical thinking of the part of those who behave this way.

I can still hear my Dad telling me how awful all those hippies were but he hadnt ever known one of course and was just reitterating stuff he had read in the papers etc and which reinforce whichever brand of xenophobia is currently making the rounds.

Teddy Boys, Hippies, Punks or whatever - people fear what they dont understand, I dont think they even question 'why' certain individuals make a stand to be different, they just react in fear to 'anything' which is different and very sadly in Sophies case, mob behaviour took over.

I find it unbelievable that in 2008, these things arent being addressed by the education system - fear of differences is counterproductive to an inclusive society.

I wont be able to get to the march but thanks again for bringing it to our attention.

Lets not allow Sophies death to have been in vain...............

Fair play to you!

Have to ask though (and don't mean to be contraversial) but... Whilst what happened to Sophie and her boyfriend is disgraceful and I hope the people who did it rot, where were the march's for Damilola Taylor, young Rhys etc...?

Ive just looked and theres a Damilola Taylor trust been established and I think there were marches or protests too - The most I can find on little Rhys is this memorial website.........

http://rhys-jones.gonetoosoon.co.uk/my_index.php

Im wondering what the heck is going on with the drink and guns and knife culture - the cannabis stuff doesnt bother me cos most stoners are usually sat chilling listening to music............. but alcohol 'is' legal and there are big problems with it, drunken marauding gangs isnt my idea of a stable society..........

I stand corrected, I new about the trusts and the websites but wasn't aware of the marches though, so thank you for that.

I agree the knife culture is very worrying, if you ask most kids why they carry one they say it's for protection.. Where has it all gone wrong?! Even since I was that age it's changed massively, the most you worried about if you had a fight then was someone using a bat (still bad I know) but it's just gone mental.

As for the cannabis v alcohol argument I've had that so many times with people it's unreal, the government will have you believe that people who use cannabis will eventually go on to a harder drug because the buzz wheres off... As someone who used to smoke a big amount of cannabis I know this is rubbish! People only go on to harder drugs because THEY want to, nothing to do with being addicted to cannabis...

The cannabis thing is nothing but a red herring the pull out of the water every now and again when they are mumbling about getting something done - Ive smoked it for 37 yrs and sometimes go days without any and never even notice any form of withdrawal.......... Ive also recently got a degree in social sciences and have my CAB certificate too - its a load of mumbo jumbo - the problem with youngsters is that they are discontented and dont really have much to look forward too in their lives - its a classic case in british society at the moment of 'the natives are getting restless' - theres no industry left so jobs and aspirations to own their homes are out the window - and who could afford a mortgage anyway on the working persons wage today - a joint of meat for a sunday roast costs an arm and a leg - theres so little incentive for youngsters Im not surprised they are getting up to no good - the prisons are full and the army - well............
