Shelter? Surely that depends whether you buy or rent your property?
If you buy your property, you'll have an asset that will go up in value over a period of 21 years.
A lot of costs are childcare and education - with a big chunk at the end for university costs. What, so nobody's children contribute to their University costs???
And don't you get tax rebates / some form of child benefit in the USA, like we do in the UK?
Sure you can spend over $190,000 on your children.
Or you can do it the more economical way for less than $40,000.
